Question:
How much protien do I need to eat

How much protien do I need to eat for my breakfast I have a boiled egg or scramble egg, for lunch I have chicken an cook veggies or cottage cheese. And for dinner I have fish or chicken with fresh veggies I have been exercising but for the last 2 weeks I haven't lost anymore weight inches yes but no weight. Could someone please tell me how much more do I need to up my protien to get off of this plateau.    — Ronda F. (posted on March 19, 2003)

From your profile, I take it you're 5 weeks or so post-op? I think you should be aiming for 50-60 grams of protein, per day. Track what you're eating on fitday.com and see how many grams of protein you're getting in -- if it isn't enough yet, supplement with a protein shake. From your menu, it looks like you're getting as much protein as you reasonably can from food (unless you add a snack here and there). In fact, it looks like a really good menu. And it's great that you're exercising. <P> Plateaus are natural. If you see that inches are coming off, then what you are doing "works." The scale does not automatically and reliably "give back" to us every time we're eating and drinking and exercising right. That takes time. It sounds trite, but stay off the scales if they drive you nuts. For long-term success, it's far more important to be re-learning your exercise and eating habits (which you are doing really well with) than to be focused on the particular speed of weight loss in any given week or month (especially when you're losing inches anyway). Again, easier said than "felt," but true!

Your doing everything right, and are just experiencing a normal plateau. They happen, and they also pass when they are ready. Just keep up the diet you are on, and the exercise. You may want to vary the amount of calories per day-try adding a few hundred for a few days, then cut back. Sometimes that tricks the system into moving again. But if you learn anything from this, its that plateaus happen..so be patient, the weight will come off!
