Question:
How do I lose last few pounds?

It has been seven months since I had my surgery. I have lost 102 pounds and need to lose an additional 23 pounds to reach my personal weight goal of 179 pounds. I am now losing real slow or at times not losing any weight at all. Has my body decided that it will not lose any more weight. Any advice out there to how to lose these last 23 pounds? Please help!!!!    — Gene F. (posted on December 29, 2003)

I have 15 lbs to go, what I did notice is about every 2 - 2 1/2 mos. I lose 5 lbs in a week to a week and a half. I felt I should go talk to someone about it. but havent Because I lost another 5. Im having a Abd plasty on Jan. 22nd and would like to have that 15 gone but I dont think I'll make it. my doctor says you can lose up to 2 yrs. Ive also heard that last few lbs is the hardest. I know I wasnt much help. sorry. I did notice sometimes if I up the calories I lose. Im just playing at this point. its so frustrating. good luck.

I am within 5-10 pounds of my goal and it has been very hard to get it off. I have to be ultra strict about the carbs in order to lose now. I am also not even sure that I really want to lose 10 more pounds but I wonder how I can be a size 8 at 156 pounds. My nutritionist says it is time to stop losing and I am beginning to feel that she may be right but I want to just get under 155 and maintain that. If you need any plastics take a few pounds into account there but then stick with the basics. Protein and plenty of fluids. At this point my weight loss directly correlates to my level of hydration. If I get enough I lose, if not then nothing. Also if I am drinking enough I cannot overeat! It is a good way to check myself. Also exercise will help at this point too. I am starting to think more about fitness and less about weight loss as time passes. I also have my husband take tons of photos of me in my new duds so that I can get a very clear picture of what I really look like. I still see a larger gal in the mirror and think that the camera must be a magic one but everyone says that the camera does not lie. Was that at all helpful? I just know that I can identify with your dilemma. Good luck. Lap RNY 1/15/03 277/157/150ish

Your body is saying that if you keep feeding me this amount of calories, I'm happy where I am at. However, if you cut back on the calories and up the heart pumping cardio exercise (boosts the metabolism to burn those calories more efficiently), then the body will start losing again. Keep in mind though that once you reduce calories to get to a new weight, eventually that will stop too, and you have to reduce again to keep going...my point is eventually you have to learn to maintain, so choose a weight and amount of calories that you can live with.

Me again. I just noticed your just 7 months post-op. Chances are you will continue to lose, though slowly more weight, at least for the next several months, though perhaps not 23...see my previous posting for how to jump start the loss again.

Hi Gene, I'm just over 7 months out also. I'm down 106lbs, started at 282, now 176, I have about 40 lbs to go. I've gone through a little plateu for the last 3 weeks, so I decided something had to be done. I simply went back to liquids for 24 hrs. I drank my protein drinks (Isopure no carb 20 oz bottle), instead of one, I had 2 that day. I had 1 yogurt, and 1 piece of soft cheese ( ok, not totally liquids, but mostly), and upped my water intake. I still got the same amount of protein in, just in fluids, not solid. I did that yesterday, I woke up this morning 2 lbs lighter than when I went to bed. And, yes, I've eaten today, and I'm still down those 2 lbs. I think it just needed a little kick in the pants to move again..lol. Good Luck to you :-) Lap RNY 5/15/03

You know if I would have had a personal goal it would have been 130 pounds. I'm about 160 pounds and it looks good on me. I think when you have been heavy for a long time you have more muscle which weighs more then fat. When I tell people I am 160 pounds they do not believe it. When I am getting weighed at the doctors office they slide the little dial to 100 first, then have to go up 50 pounds. I wear junior sizes 9 pants or small pants in ladies. I wear medium or large tops because of the excess skin on my arms and my shoulders are broad. Sometimes I don't think its good to go by numbers on a scale. It may be hard for you to look in a mirror and say I look like I am a normal, thin healthy weight. Sometimes its good to ask others.

If you are less than a year out, you still have a very good chance to get to goal. Get back to the very basics of protein, water and exercise. Watch the carbs too. When I was about 6-7 months out I was eating way more "bad" carbs (crackers mostly)than I should and my weight loss slowed down big time. ~Sidney~ Open RNY 10-23-02 down 130+ and below goal
