Question:
How soon did you hit your first plateau?

I am 4 weeks post op, and have not lost a single pound in the last 10-14 days. I am getting really really bummed. I know that's not much time, but I usually don't read about people hitting plateaus so early. I am drinking lots of liquids (more then the Dr. asks for) I feel like I am getting plenty of protein, and I'm walking 3 1/2 - 5 miles a day, plus some swimming. Does anybody have any suggestions?? I know some people say even though the pounds aren't coming off, the inches are. Unfortunately, I never measured myself to give myself a starting point. Other then what I lost right after surgery, I don't see any differences in my appearance. My clothes are not loose or anything. HELP!!    — tlg6056 (posted on November 15, 2000)

My first plateau was at 4 weeks post-op. It lasted 4 weeks. It will pass in time - your body needs to catch up. Try increasing protein, water, and exercise to break it. Even when we do things exactly as we should, we will experience the plateaus. As trite as it sounds, and I have "been there done that more than once", it will pass - keep up your good work!

Tammy, congratulations first of all for becoming athletic. I think that's great! Your plateau will subside soon enough. My first plateau was at 6 weeks post-op and it lasted about 7 days. My suggestion is drop 200 calories a day. The decrease will be noticeable. Indeed you're walking and swimming but remember that builds muscle too and muscle weighs more than fat. I think if you continue to exercise and just cut calories a little you'll be right on track. Good luck in your continued weight-loss journey...Jennifer Znika, 150 lbs. lost forever:)

You are doing fine. Take your measurements every couple of weeks. I had multiple plateaus early on, some lasting over 3 weeks. The weight will soon fall off as your body cannot maintain such a "fatgrab" for long! Lately though, after months of frustrating plateaus, the weight seems to be falling off again for me. We are all different.

Hang in there Tammy. This will all pass. One thing I recommend is to not weigh yourself as often. I decided before surgery I would only do it once a month, and I have stuck to that. First, I don't obsess about the scale. I suspect I have hit plateaus for certain short time periods, but since I don't weigh myself every week, I don't notice it. And every time I have weighed myself, I have shown good weight loss. (I'm 6 months post-op and down 91 pounds.) Also, women are very susceptible to short term weight gains and losses. Our cycles have a lot to do with that. On the other hand, I would certainly not say that plateaus don't happen because I know they do. They are natural and are our bodies' way of saying "whoooaaaa, slow down!". Just give it time. Follow the advice given below and hang in there!
