Question:
Can being dependant on laxatives cause a plateau?

I am finding that since we have to take iron and eat lots of protein that it is causing constipation. I don't like having to take a laxative all the time but i also found that when I was eating carbs I was having a plateau as well. I am 6 weeks post-op and the weight so far is doing well but I want it to continue and not be a struggle from here on in. Also does anyone know if Correctol is too stimulating for an open rny pouch as a laxative?    — UMMADUMMASS (posted on August 29, 2002)

Hi Caroline, I have been using a product called benefiber. It can be mixed right in with your food. I have been fairly lucky with not needing it very often, but when I have used it, it has worked good for me. Hope this helps. {{{HUGS}}}

I take Senkot - or the generic thereof. I think it is more gentle. ALso, for all stomach/digestive meds, I only take a half dose - I think our systems are more sensative. You can always take another half dose if things don't move along - but I personally don't want them to work too fast.

I take Fiber-Caps - the Walmart brand. I can't stomach liquid fiber products so I take two caps with my other pills and about 40 ounces of water each morning. I also suffer from bad constipation from time to time and thanks to my two little friends I cal Hekyl and Jekyl (one internal, one external hemmoroid), I really, really can not deal with it. So, in addition to the fiber I too take Senekot (again, the WalMart brand). Sometimes I go a couple of days with out and I am fine, some times I take one before bed, sometimes two. Which is far les than the 8 pills a day they say you can take. I also drink about 100 ounces of water each day which I think helps keep things going. I follow a strict protein diet with litle more than a 1/4 c. serving of fruit OR veggies each day. So, yeah, before I started the fiber/senakot routine it was like pushing a boulder throuh a pinhole on the bad days. I've only really had one serious plateau since very early on. ~Paula M.
