Question:
Need some ideas on pureed food. Cannot stomach the pureed chicken, turkey, beef

Had open ryn on April 14th and have one month of pureed food to look forward to. Cannot stomach the pureed chicken, turkey, beef or tuna. I have been living on Carnation Instant Breakfast, cottage cheese and yogut. Any suggestion would be appreciated. Also, I did get brave and tried tomato juice today. it did stay down and was nice to drink something new. Is tomato and v8 vegetable accepted bariatric liquids for this point. I need help.    — Maureen C. (posted on April 24, 2003)

Have you tried a soft cooked egg? When you puree the chicken are you adding broth? Otherwise, it's just too dang dry, in my opinion. I basically started adding foods at that point, and I didn't run them all threw the blender, I just chewed until it was mush. I didn't throw up once, still haven't, so I must have done something right! :) My nutritionist and surgeon told me that if a food could be pureed, I could eat it. But, nothing with seeds, or other hard things that couldn't be squished up. Hang in there, it will get better!!

5 weeks out. same problem. I've not pureed anything. Here's what I ate and still eat. black bean soup (it's actually pureed : ) ), hummus (especially Cedar's lemon), ricotta cheese, scrambled eggs with cheddar, veggie chili with sour cream and cheddar, egg salad, applesauce with a dollop of sour cream (yummy), sugar free fudgcicles and ice pops, sf jello with sour cream...I know I know..sounds gross, but it's good, chopped chicken liver (very good), chicken and sun dried tomatoe sausage with casing removed, guacamole and/or avocado, and ALOT of muenster cheese and mozzarella (only fresh it's milkier). Go to the supermarket. Look around and see what's mushy! That's what I did. Good luck. BTW, the fried chicken/food craving does go away!! ; )

Try a little cream based soup, or some broth that really helps... I actually ate baby food, while it tasted aweful it worked for me...

One of my early favs was egg drop soup. Cream soups are good too. I basically skipped the pureed stage for the same reason as you-could not stomach pureeing perfectly good meals, so at about 3 weeks post op, I went to soft foods-mushy stuff like the chili, scrambled eggs with cheese, tunafish salad on crackers, crab cakes, soft steamed white fish, things like that. Small tiny bites, chew to mush...

You have a alternative. My surgeon says cut the meat into pencil eraser sized bitsa and chew to death. This equals puree.

I hated all meats for about the first five months. I would try to force some down for the protein but finally gave up. I took a Real Meals shake everyday because it has 60 grams of protein. I used to eat a lot of creamed soups, yogurt, pinto's and cheese from Taco Bell, and one of my favorites was to make stuffed shells with sauce and kinda pick out the ricotta and dip it in the sauce. V8 is fine for post ops. I hope this helps.

I blended cottage cheese, crushed pineapple and lime jello together and let it set. Yummy!
