Question:
Pregnancy or plastic surgery first?

Hi, I am 13 months post op and down 158 pounds (yeah!) I only have about 30 more pounds to lose. I have an extreme amount of sagging skin which I would like to start looking into getting rid of through plastic surgery. However, my husband and I aren't sure if we are going to have any more children. Has anyone had the surgery (TT, body lift, breat lift, etc), and then gotten pregant after that? If so, did it negate the results of your plastics? Thanks for the info! Allison 352/194/165 Open RNY 1/2/03    — Allison B. (posted on February 17, 2004)

Allison- Congrats on the great weight loss! I have lost 140lbs and am alos searching for PS, but I have to tell you that my issues are mostly from stretch marks. I have lose skin but it wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the stretch marks so I would say to wait until you get pregnant because although your muscles may hold tight during pregnancy after a TT ( I have heard this to be true from another member) but if you are prone to stretchmarks, then you may be dissatisfied with the results. On the other hand,if you have a horrible apron that is causing great discomfort and rashes, rather than just emotional distress then it may not bother you to have it done before hand. Just an oppinion. Good luck and congrats! Denise 3/20/03~140~below goal

Allison, I know that every plastic surgeon I have contacted has asked if we were sure that we were finished having children. I had my tubes tide after having my twins and am now in the process of plastic surgery consults with several surgeons.

Congrats on the weight loss! I think that it depends on your given situation. I decided to have my plastics done, even thought I know one day I will want to have children. I figure if it's that awful after childbirth then I'll just have it fixed again! My PS said that I wouldn't be in any worse shape after having children than anyone else who has kids. I had a tummy tuck, belt lipectomy, breast lift and implants. To be honest, I already want to have my tt redone, as he removed 18 lbs. of skin and it's not as tight as I would have liked it to be. Just my thoughts!

My surgeon perfers to wait to after you have children. I say if you have money to burn you can do it now and then again after kids. I don't know too many people in that position. Cheryl S 21mos. -150lbs

I am 9 1/2 months post op and went to see a plastic surgeon on Monday as I have a hernia that has to be removed and my doctor does not want me to have 2 separate surgeries. I still won't be having it done until I am a year out but he wanted to start the insurance process now. As I am only 27 and want to have another child that is one of my first questions or her. She said she has many patients who had the tummy tuck first and then children and were fine. She said that I did not want to have the skin that I have now and get pregnant. So I have decided to go for it. Ronika 314/183/165 18 pounds to go

I asked my OBGyn this question at my last visit. I figured he has seen what happens to the pregnant belly after a TT. He strongly recommended that I wait until I was sure that I didn't want another baby. He said that the tummy is so tight that it causes a lot of discomfort during the pregnancy. Best of luck to you, Michelle 270/170/130

I am almost 3 years post-op and currently 8 months pregnant. Since you are considering pregnancy I would suggest holding off on the plastic surgery till afterwards. That is what I am and have been doing. Otherwise all that work you had done will be for nothing. Your skin is already stretched out and it would be easier on your skin if you have the baby first. If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail me at [email protected].
