Question:
4 DAYS POST-OP - normal?- please help-im in a great deal of pain....

I know so many people who say they barely feel anything. I KNOW I just had major surgery and everyone is different. I am only 22 years old. my doc said the surgery (LAP RNY) went well. i got home from the hospital 36 hours ago. My roommie in the hosp. had an open RNY and was moving around and helping ME, before i could her! i walk around when i can, usually every 1-2 hours for 5-10 minutes, otherwise i am sitting up trying to breathe deeply to avoid pneumonia b/c i used to smoke :( or laying down and sleeping. The gas pain has been relieved alot b/c of walking and milk of malgnesia/ But the incisions hurt quite a bit, and i do feel my whole stomach has turned inside out, which i know it has. JUst wondering anyone else's experiences/ My surgeon said i should be his posterchild for this surgery b/c i am so determined and young, but i am in so much pain right now, i do not know how to deal with it, the Percocet only works a little bit. I can hear my tummy rumbling so loud all the time, whether i am eating or drinking or doing nothing. Any help would be great, thanks!    — Lezlie Y. (posted on June 3, 2002)

Hi, I had sharp pain too. The worse was trying to sleep at night! It took 10-14 days, and then I felt nothing. The tiredness stayed around a little longer, but once the pain is gone things are a whole lot better! Hang in there, it will be gone before you know it. Best of luck on your new life.

I have no tolarance for pain. I was hurting after surgery. I felt like I was turned inside out. The only thing that got me through this time (3-8 or 9 days) was the pain meds. If you are in that much pain call the DR and ask for medication to ease the pain. No one should have to suffer.--- Good Luck

Hi sweetie! <hugs> I am so sorry that you are in pain! I had LAP RNY on 5/15/02 and was in AGONY. I could not sit still, lay down, walk, breathe, drink, go to the bathroom; do anything without being in great pain. I called my surgeon and he presribed some pain meds which helped. Everyone's tolerance for pain is different, and everyone's body is different so how you will react to your WLS is hard to know beforehand. I know that it is common to experience pain for many weeks for some, and perhaps a week or less for others. Keep your chin up, get new meds, rest and walk if you can! The hard part is over!!! <hugs>

Hi there...a lot of people feel like hell the first few weeks/months. I am one of them. It sounds like your pain meds are not adequate for the kind of pain you are experiencing. I had a large bottle of Lortab Elixir (liquid Vicodin) given to me before I left the hospital. I took it every 6 hours and I can honestly say that I never felt pain beyond the occasional ache up by my left shoulder (from the rib spreaders). Talk to your doc and see what he/she can prescribe. You are going to be rumbly and burpy for quite a while...from what I have read this is normal, although annoying. Keep up the moving around...and with the addition of adequate pain relief you'll find you can move around more. Get on the horn and call that doc...there's no need to suffer like that. Hugs, Joy

You sound like me three weeks ago. Ask your doctor for some better pain meds. I had tylenol with codeine and it worked great. When it ran out I called him and insisted on more. A week from now you will be feeling much better, the worst is almost over.

you sound perfectly normal to me..i was totally unaware of the pain that would be involved with the surgery..i had loratab for my pain and it worked well..i had an open incision that is approx. 12 inches long and the pain was enourmous..but as the days and weeks went by it lessened and lessened...walkin helps a great deal!! for clots and for breathing...u are doing great and u will feel the difference with in the near future...
