Question:
Anyone gained weight just 10 weeks post op from Roux-en-Y?

I am just 10 weeks post op from Roux-en-Y and until now have been very excited about my weight loss! I had lost 46 lbs. until now. I weighed yesterday and had gained back 1.75 lbs. How discouraging! I don't know of anything that I've done differently. Any suggestions? Has anyone else experienced this? If so, does it turn around and start coming off again quickly? I'd hate to think that this is the end! I started at 315 lbs and I'm now down to 270.75. My goal is 175. Help!    — ladybug711 (posted on June 8, 2004)

Calm down, sweetie! First of all - THROW AWAY THE SCALES! Or have someone hide them and only break them out once a week. You could be ovulating, getting ready to start your period or just need a good poop! Our weight can fluctuate 2 to 3 pounds in the SAME DAY! Just play by the rules, drink your water, eat your protein, take your vitamins and it WILL COME OFF! Also, you will hit MANY MANY plateaus. Your body has a way of saying "HEY! Wait a minute!" after losing lots of pounds, and takes a little time to catch up. You had this surgery to break free from obesity. Don't be a slave to the scales! GOOD LUCK!

Ditto to what Scottie said! I only weighed once/3-4 weeks because it will drive you insane to weigh all the time. The weight IS going to come off but you will go mad if you are looking at those numbers all the time.

I once gained 10 lbs in 2 days and then lost it within two days. Whatever it was obviously it wasn't fat so I decided not to weigh so often.

I only weigh once a week, and know that I will gain a pound just by drinking 16 ounces of water. Don't worry about the scales, they can become an obsession. And, if you are exercising, muscle weighs more than fat, so you may even gain a little with the muscle development. Pay attention to how your clothes fit.

Dianne...please don't worry. Gaining a few pounds is completely normal. And believe me...I know exactly how you feel. I worried all the time for about the first three months because I wasn't losing as fast as a couple of friends who'd also had the surgery. You're doing great. It took me approximately 3 months to understand that each person loses at their own rate. On two separate occasions, I have gained 6.5 pounds within days. But it all works out in the end. I'm 5 months post op and have lost 79.5 pounds. Once I accepted I was in the majority of people in the pounds and rate I'm losing, I've been completely happy. My friends lost incredible amounts of weight very quickly, but they're in the minority when I compare what I read here on the message boards. Keep doing everything your physician tells you to do and you'll do fine. Good luck and God bless...Kathy

I know exactly where you're coming from. Early on (I'm only about 4 mo now) I lost fast for about a month and 1/2 to 2 months, but then had 2 Dr visits where I lost only 10 lbs (in 2 visits 3 wks apart at 5 lbs each visit). I was trying really hard to do all the right things and couldn't understand why I wasn't losing more. Now I weigh about every 3-6 wks, or whenever I get around to going to Drs office JUST to weih in. I have now as of today lost 86 lbs, and am as pleased as punch. IT REALLY IS WORKING. The last time I had weiged, I'd lost 25 lbs since last weighin, and this visit 3 wks later have list 14 more lbs. SOOOOOO sometimes you lose fast, and then have times where you lose slower. Becky Open RNY 1/30/04 352/266/150

I posted this once already and hope this doesn't post twice. Anyway, I know exactly where you're coming from. When I was early on (I'm only about 4 1/2 months now) I had lost fast for the 1st month or 2. Then I had 2 Drs visits 3 wks apart where I only lost 5 lbs at each visit. I was trying really hard to do everything I was supposed to do, and couldn't understand the slow loss. I only weigh about every 3/6 wks or whenever I get into PCP's office to weigh. My last visit (3 wks ago) I had lost 25 lbs, and this visit lost 14 more for a total loss of 86 lbs. I am please as punch!! SOOOOOOO to make a long story short, sometimes we lose fast, and then sometimes we lose slow, BUT IT WILL COME OFF. I have upped my protein to 100 or over gms a day, and upped H2o to 100-130 oz day. I think this is helping a lot. (I might reach the century mark by 6 months.) Becky open RNY 1/30/04 352/266/150

First of all, you must consume an extra 3500 calories to actually gain a pound. What is happening is you are retaining fluid. You must drink the same amount of water every day to stay the same. None of us do this so our weight fluctuates. Think about it, if you fill a glass with 16 oz. of water and one with only 8 oz. the 16 oz. glass weighs more. Don't worry. I am three months post op and have "gained" 5 to 7 pounds at time. It all comes right back off. Hang in there. You are doing great!
