Question:
Surgery was May 7th and I have only lost 14 pounds.

I am very proud of losing 14 pounds but the real question is I am 5'2.5" tall and currently weigh 243, can I still reach my goal of 125-130? Thanks for all answers. Emma Lou    — emmalou (posted on June 8, 2004)

No one can really tell you if you WILL reach your goal but you almost certainly CAN. I was 238 at surgery, am eight months out and am at 163. I lost 40 before surgery so that's a total of 113. I am 13 away from a personal goal of 150 and I know from here on out, I'll have to work a bit harder at it. I haven't lost really fast like some people have but it has been steady. I haven't hit a true plateau yet but I did lose pretty slowly. You can look at my profile to see my losing pattern but, even though it has seemed somewhat slow, I do fully expect to reach my goal by following the rules. You're still in that phase of "losing no matter what you do" but now is the time for you to develop those good practices which will help you as you get further out and will help you maintain after you reach your goal. Good luck to you and I wouldn't start worrying so much about whether I'd reach goal right now but would be focusing on learning all the lifestyle changes you need to be making to be a long-term success.

Emma Lou, Like SC Babe said no one can tell you whether or not you will get to goal. That is something your and your body will decide. I can tell you this. I has surgery on 5/16/03. I has lost only 28 pounds the first 6 weeks. No one year later I am at goal. This is coming from some one who was expecting to be a slow loser. It's all up to you. I dedicated myself to exercising and following the rules and I made it. Keep getting your H2O and protein in, exercising, and making good food choices and it will help you achieve your goal.

Emma Lou, I am 5'3 and started WLS at 248 pounds I am 6 months out and have lost only 58 pounds. I have been a slow loser since day 1!!! The first month I lost 19 pounds, the second month only 9!!! I think it will be hard to recoup those first few months when everyone loses so quickly and I did not. To top it off, I have a strict doctor who expects his patients to get to goal in 6 months, and it floors me that people actually do!! I fully expected this to take a year to get to goal, but then with my doctor's expectations and seeing others lose so quickly, I get discouraged. I wish my loss was quicker, but I praise God every day for the pounds I have lost and for the opportunity to better my life, even if it is slower than the rest.

I know how you feel. I had surgery on 4/21, and I have lost only 26lbs. I know people who have lost WAY more than me at this point. I just continue taking my protein shakes and hope it will pick up soon...
