Question:
Is it normal to plateau at 7 weeks post -op?

I had a open proximal rny on Oct 12. I have lost 40 lbs since then, most of it the first month. Since Nov 14 I have only lost 5 lbs. I am on full food now. I am taking in about 60-70 grams of protien a day, 1 protein drink, the rest from food. I drink 8 glasses of water and take all my supplements. I am only walking at this point 2 miles at a time, but only sporadicly. Any suggestions?    — claire C. (posted on December 4, 2000)

Claire, I'm the queen of plateaus (well, one of them!) Anyhow, I have found a few things to be true: 1) my body gets 'stuck' at familiar weights and tries to hang on; 2) I seem to lose one week and not lose anymore for three weeks; 3) When I do lose, I lose anywhere from 6-11 pounds at a time; 4) I have been discouraged, and just when I think 'that's all there is', I lose again. You are doing very well with your post-op program...hang in there. After you recognize your weight loss cycle, you'll feel less discouraged. Good Luck!

My suggestion to you is.....patience. Like the others have said, you could weigh the same for two weeks and then suddenly lose 10 pounds in one week. That's what happened to me on several occasions during the past three or four months. I think it's very important to enjoy every second of what you have accomplished so far and not get obsessively caught up in "more, more, MORE"! As long as you are doing what you are supposed to...it will come...not to mention, you will be a happier person along the way! As for plateauing, when it happens to me...I eat the same thing every day for a week (three boiled egg whites at 8am, 1 banana at 10am, tuna on 4 crackers at noon and again at 3pm, then at 5pm I have a shrimp cocktail drinking water in between every feeding) Don't ask me why, but this always gets my weight loss going again....I've lost between 6 and 10 pounds a week when I've done this. By the way, I'm 7 months post op and have gone from 316 pound to 206 as of this morning! And I feel soooooo terrific!!!

I think plateaus are a part of weight loss. Just because we took such drastic measures to lose our weight we expect it to melt right off. I think changing your exercise program would be a good start. Add some weight training to your walking is important. Also if you are not keeping a journal start one because when you got through these times you can look back and see what worked the last time you were in a plateau. I'm with you too because I'm 7 weeks post-op and I thought I'd be a little farther but I talked to my doctor and he said that I was right on target Hang in there
