Question:
Anyone have a sure fire PLATEAU BUSTER plan??? I am getting desperate!

What, if anything, has worked for you to break a really long plateau? Mine is taking on a life of it's own. I even skipped my follow-up with my surgeon because I am kind of discouraged at my standstill. Any and all advice is welcome...as long as it's nice!!!!!!! E-mail me or post it here! Thanks a million!    — Linda D. (posted on February 21, 2003)

I don't recommend this but strep throat did it for me. I weighed 218 on 2/14, I weigh every friday, and after 3 days of strep I weigh 211. I got sick on wednesday and am feeling better now but still no appitite. Before surgery I would have eaten, even if it killed me. Try clear liquids only for a few days and see if it starts you moving again.

Hi! To break a plateau, what you need to do is eat a greater percent of your calories from protein (lots of people simply increase the protein without cutting back on other carb calories and then the plateau won't break!). At the same time, you MUST increase your activity. This is because your muscles can function on ketone bodies, which they make from fat. But your brain cannot function on anything but glucose, which you make from PROTEIN (not fat!!). Lastly, increase the water to combat any water retention. Hope you bust the plateau soon! :)

Here is what I do to break plateaus: vary the amount of calories you are eating-add a few hundred for a few days, then cut back by a few hundred for a few days. Then, eat more protein (I added a protein shake a day). I also increased the water significantly and added 1 more work out session a week(from 3 to 4 sessions of 45 minutes each). I've also heard that varying the type of workout helps. Then I cut down (did not eliminate) the snacking/carbs/sugars. I'm within 10 pounds of goal so it's pulling teeth to lose at this point, but when I get serious and do the above, I can usually lose 1-2 pounds a week.
