Question:
I've gained 4 pounds in one week. Have I stretched my stomach?

I am now three weeks post-up and believe I have stretched my stomach already. The problem I have is that it is very hard for me to sip my liquids, so I end up taking "gulps" of water, etc. A huge mistake I also made is that I was drinking fruit juices without watering them down...all that sugar!!! I've tried freezing my liquids to slow it down, and it's working now, but I'm concerned that the damage is already done. Right now, I can drink a can of Boost over a 20-30 period with no problem. Is this normal. I had the BPD/DS procedure, but I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it. Please advise. Thanks    — Kimberly D. (posted on November 15, 2001)

Well, I had RNY, but I have something to contribute. I thought I did something "bad" at about 4 weeks post-op because I gained 2 lbs. I was so upset for the entire week. I thought of all the possibilities. Stretching my pouch, to many carbs, etc. But, then I just had to reassure myself that I'm doing everything by the book and I calmed down. Went to the doctors that following week. So, I ended up losing 5 lbs. 2 from before and 3 extra. My guess would be that you (and I) gained water! Good Luck

Kimberley--I really doubt that you have stretched your pouch. Especially with just liquids! Yes, we have to be careful not to overeat, but I think way too many recent post-ops have developed this "stretching" fear. Believe it or not, these little pouches are pretty resilient and I think actual stretching that ruins the pouch happens to a minimal number of people...and certainly not through drinking of liquids. I think though that over time everyone's pouch stretches a little. So don't worry. Your fears are normal, but unnecessary. Best of luck.
