You should let the nursing staff and your dr. no that you fight cronic constapation, they will proable give you a stool softner or something, They can even give yu prune juice, But it all depends on you surgery, But there is things that they can do. also the medication that they give you for pain can also make you constapated. So let them no, Good Luck Wendy

Let your doctor know. Pain medication tend to slow people down in that area as well. He/She should be able to order you a liquid stool softener while in the hosp. Good Luck

Yeah, I was either consitpated or the other side of that. I gave in after surgery & bought Milk of Mag. Great stuff! Tell your doctor.

Once the Dr. moved me to liquid pain medicine, he told me to take colace liquid with each dose. Unfortunately, it made me dump, so they told me to take Milk of Magnesia whenever I got constipated. It tasted awful and I switched to colace gelcaps when I could take pills (around 6 weeks). Now I chew 2 fiber choice sugarfree wafers each day and it seems to keep me regular. Good luck!

My doctor told me that it would be good to take Milk of Magnesia. Believe me it works and it is not harsh on your new stomach.

I'm currently using a pro-biotic which supplies good bacteria to my intestinal system and also helps improve my constipation that is being caused by my pain medications. That's a whole other story. Also, my primary doctor recommended Benefiber. He said he didn't know how it would effect me, because of my new insides, so I'm going to give it a try some day when I'm home the next day so I can see what happens. From what I understand you can put it in your coffee, or other beverage and it's tasteless. You really shouldn't strain, because it causes damage to your colon, which can cause diverticulosis. Good luck and God Bless.

I've always been constipated. One of my docs suggested Milk of Magnesia. It did'nt work! I took DOUBLE the dose... and it still did'nt work even after several days. So I tried some cookie like waffers. I think they are Medimucial. I tried the cinamin ones. Oh, they are good tasting a gentle. Now I can poop up a storm and my cats go flying out of the litter box when I hit the bathroom. lol

I have always had problems with constipation myself. Pre-op I used colace and took fiber caplets. I even had to have surgery to repair two anal fissures, so this was bad for me. Post-op I have had quite the opposite problem and don't know why but I'd much rather take this problem then the other. I took nothing in the hospital or at home since surgery either. I hope it works out for you too.

I have had terrible problems with constipation since my surgery. I have had good luck with Milk of Magnesia and with Colace. However, I got scared because I was having to take these products on a daily basis. By accident I saw a product called "Colon Clenz" in the local health food store. I tried it - and I love it. According to the manufacturers it is safe to take daily - it is made of all natural minerals and herbs. There is also a companion product called "Ultra Colon Clenz" which contains a lot of apple pectin. Both products work really well and so far I have had no adverse reactions to either of them.
