Question:
Alternate ways to get protein mix down

Before my Lap/Rny on 05-08-03, I researched the internet and found a site to purchase the Atkins Protien Powder for a really good price--buying a dozen cans... already had a few cans of it. I thought I had to drink the stuff for months?? well, I have LOTS left--and can't barely stand it anymore. I need creative ways to use it! I can't use ASPARTAME-NUTRASWEET or SWEET-N-LOW type products (highly sensitive) but can use SPLENDA. I was down 55# three weeks ago--all was great. Then one day, I hopped on the scale and noticed I gained 7 pounds! FREAK-OUT time. I did have an injection of Cortizone a week or so before then so I could move my knee (arthritis)... I don't know what the problem is. I have been battling with these 7 pounds for three weeks now; back and forth... So I guess I need to go back to basics? I am soooo discouraged... Please, any suggestions?    — barbara L. (posted on August 14, 2003)

I'm pretty sure cortizone shots cause weight gain - try using a search engine to search for "cortizone shots" AND "weight gain." You may want to ask your doctor if the gain is temporary. Good luck.

If you like pudding, chill the can and add it to Sugar Free Jell-O instant pudding in place of water - then you have a high protein pudding. :-)

The pudding idea is a good one, but with sf jello, you get the aspertame. Now, I buy Tapioca pudding mix that doesn't have any sugar or sweetner in it, and put splenda in it, along with protien powder. It is really good that way. I also get the unflavored/unsweetened geliten (sp?) mixes, and make it up like ice cream with splenda and protein powder. You can also use your protein powder when you make sweets sweetened with splenda -- the flavors of protein powder is what makes it difficult... vanilla mixes with anything, but chocolate and potatoes.. YUCK! LOL :~) I also, when I get the urge for a cup of caffiene free coffee, put a scoop of protein mix in the cup. It tastes pretty good! LOL!! The best recipe for that is 1 cup caffiene free coffee, 1 scoop chocolate protein mix, 1 scoop dry milk, 1 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder, 2 teaspoons splenda and blend well! YUMMY!! I drink a lot of protien this way in the winter months. I don't like coffee in the summer... makes me too hot! LOL! :~) I make hot chocolate that way, too... and put strawberry flavored protein powder in it, and it is really pretty good!! Also, have you tried mixing your powders with fruit? A cup of milk or water with a banana, a few strawberries, and a scoop of either chocolate, vanilla, strawberry or other flavored protein mix makes a yummy treat, especially if you blend in a cup of ice after you blend together the other stuff. Smoothie!! :~) Good Luck!! My second profile (under sharon m. brittain) has other ideas for you! :~)

Here is a link to a ton of protein smoothie and frosty freeze recipes. I like the cookies& cream and the orange creamsicle the best.

I make a kind of mousse out of mine. I mix 2 scoops of atkins with 1 c no fat whip cream. I then mix in milk (or you can do cold water) to desired consistancy. You can also use water instead. Persionaly I can't stomach (no pun intended) any of the protien powders except atkins. I'll probably get blasted for this, but I can drink it by mixing 2 scoops w/ 16 oz 1% sweet acadolphous milk (2.5 g fat/ serving, 8 g protein) and 1 package of the kroger brand instant breakfast (it has 6 g protein as apposed to 4 for s/f cib) and 1 tbsp s/f chocolate milk mix. If you dump on milk, then substitute water for milk, and add 1/4 c powderd milk. Milk may have a kinda high ammount of sugar (13g/serving), but it is natural, and not processed. My nutritionist cleared me to drink up to 16 oz of it a day. It comes out to about 46 g protein and I drink half in the morning, and the other half mid afternoon.
