Question:
Am I done? Can't lose a thing!!1

At 7 months out I had to take two cortisone shots. Immediately I gained 5 lbs. Since then I have lost only 8 lbs and I am not at 9 months. Total loss is 96 lbs. Will I stop now? I am still considered obese with a BMI of 37. Did anyone have this experience? Thanks, Linda    — Linda T. (posted on April 18, 2002)

To continue you need to monitor your calories (1000-1100), fat intake (10% or less total calories), carbohydrate intake (20% or less total calories), protein intake (70% or more) drink 64+ ounces of water daily and excerise 3 or 4x a week raising your heart rate to its target. You can track it all on fitday.com --- Good Luck

I just got off a six week long dose of prednisone for an asthma flare up that was followed by a steriod injection to get a BAD case of hives under control. I gained 4 pounds by the end of that. I am almost 2 years out from open RNY and I kind of freaked out. I have lost all the weight that I need to according the the doctor (I would still like to lose another 10) and I didn't want to start going in the opposite direction. He assured me that as soon as I was off the steriods, the weight would come right off. I wanted to be sure so I started using www.fitday.com to trake everything that went into my mouth. In less than a week, I was rid of those 4 extra pounds. It really makes you think about what you are eating and drinking if you know that you are going to have to "write" it down. I realized that I had been eating too many carbs (make me bloat terrible) and not drinking enough water. I was replacing some of it with dt. pop and I need the water. Plus, I hadn't been doing the exercising like I was before. Our bodies were made to move. When I don't get enough exercise, my back and hips go out and my arthritis acts up. Try tracking what you eat and drink and get in some more movement and see if those pounds don't fall off.

My weight loss has almost stopped since month six. My BMI won't go below 35 so I know how you feel.

Even though the cortisone can mess with you temporarily, you didn't say what your regimen has been and which surgery, and how it was done. Perhaps something in your eating plan has caused the complete halt, too. Are you drinking 64+ oz of water? Getting in 60+ g of protein supplement? Staying away from sugars (even natural ones)? Eating small portions but not grazing? All those things can work against you. You lose well for a few months than come to a smashing halt. But if you're doing all that AND you are still mechanically intact, you might start asking how long the weight gain reaction will last from the meds.

I stopped at 7 mos.- (90lbs. down) and my guidelines clearly stated that would be normal. So- I am currently monitoring protein (but then, I never really stopped), exercising 3x a week and drinking my water. I do not graze. My 1 mo. weigh in w/Curves is on the 28th- I will know if I jumpstarted it or not- thing is, I feel better! Clothes feel a little better. What's your exercise program like?
