Question:
DID I just Dump?

Okay GANGGGGGGGG , do you always vomit when you Dump?? I have an episode tonight, that I did not get nauseus or vomit, but had ears ringing, felt like my stomach was on fire, sweats, and instant tired. Think that was dumping?? Thought I had to vomit to be one of the Dump Club Thanks Jeri    — Jeri P. (posted on May 12, 2002)

I heard that most people don't vomit when they dump....I could be wrong though. But, all your other symptoms sound like you dumped. I've never dumped on sugars, but I did dump on one very fatty, oily, high calorie piece of chicken...and I had what you had (plus a runny nose) without the vomiting.

Usually you vomit if you are 'stuck'. It sounds like you dumped! Symptoms include the sweats, cramping, lethargy, diarrhea. There may be more, but that is what I experience. It can go on for hours too. My ears didn't ring. It may be a little different for everybody.

Dumping and vomiting are not synonymous. I don't always vomit when dumping, and I don't always dump when vomiting. Usually when I get nauseous, it's because I ate too fast, I ate too much, or I didn't chew enough, or it's bread. When I dump, it's usually because whatever I ate had too much sugar, too much fat, or was just plain too rich. Keep smilin' anyway. Margie B

All dumping means is that insulin hits your digestive tract too quickly after having eaten something high in sugar. It normally makes me feel extremely tired and have a rapid heartbeat, etc. I seldom throw up when I dump.

Something I have wondered about for awhile. During dumping anyone check their blood sugar? Can it spike high? How long does this last if it occurs? I made some really dumb food chices the other night under severe stress and found my blood sugar spiked high but was normal a couple hours later. I still fight eating under stress. Wow did I have a sressful week:(

Bob: Just reasoning this out . . . It seems to me that during dumping you will have LOW blood sugar because when the sugar hits your intestines, the body sends a flood of insulin as a response. The symptoms associated with dumping are actually those of LOW BLOOD SUGAR, which is why it is the same response you get when you wait too long to eat (or at least I do). It does seem odd that you get low blood sugar from eating too much sugar, but the response of the body more than cancels out the sugar you ate. Make sense?

Cheri I wonder if sugar hits, goes high, and then the insulin rushes to lower it, and what dumpers feel is this bounce up and down?

Bob- Don't know--it could be a combo effect. I know I feel that dumping feeling if I wait too long to eat and I must eat a little sugar to relieve it--nothing else works. I got that before surgery too with a certain combination of caffeine and carbs.
