Question:
Corralation between pre-surgery appetite vs post weight-loss?

I know there are MOs who have big appetites, and MOs who dont. Some have high metabolisms and some have low ones. I was wondering if MOs how had big appetites were able to lose faster because it restricted their diets to the point were their metabolisms were able to catch up, while MOs who had normal or low appetites didnt lose weight as fast because they weren't actually eating a whole lot less. Just kind of interesting to hear....maybe there should be a study or something. I think I will lose it slower (slow metabolism...normal appetite) I think I've messed up my metabolism due to diets. Thoughts?    — Tyrone T. (posted on December 27, 2002)

I am 3 months post-op -60 pounds. Starting weight 264 at 5'7. I ate ALOT pre-op, and had a pretty slow metabolism I think, probably due to yo-yo dieting. Don't know if this helps or not, but there it is.

Years of yo yo dieting and LOTS of FASTING have really screwed up my metabolism. Then add to it a "hell of a big appetite"! I think the fasting (Heck I know it was the fasting) that really messed up my metabolism. I fasted often for 7-10 days (don't anyone ever tell me that I don't have will power!) and the last several times I fasted I did'nt lose even one pound! If anyone had told me they fasted 7-10 days and did'nt lose I'd called them a liar. So I know my metabolism was shot. However once I got around 6 months post op I do believe my metabolism has slowed even more. Now it is almost impossible to lose again. :( - Still 30 pounds from goal at almost 20 months post op.

Please, don't anyone give the old saying that "after two or three days of fasting that hunger stops". BULL! I was stark raving hungry for ALL of those 7-10 days. I could sniff out and smell a slice of toast that was cooked a quarter mile away. I know that will power was not my problem. Fasting was the hardest thing I ever did.

I definately agree with you. Or at least think that it is a possibility. I was on Weight watchers for three years up until the date of my consult. I had lost only 50 pounds and slowly but surely put it all back on. (still going too--pissed me off)So I was already convinced that my metabolism is low. And Im definately a slow loser. (oct 28 down 35)I do also have an appetite and most people I hear on here say they have to Make themselves eat. Not Me. That may be why Im a slow loser up against someone who probably doesnt eat the way they should at all times. I know If I had to make myself do it I problably wouldnt eat much either. Anyway there's some more food for thought!
