Question:
I am so tired all the time.

I was diagnosed as amemic and take iron but I can hardly get out of bed some mornings. I had my surgery in May of 2000. I am not eating the way I should so perhaps that's why I'm so tired. I was just wondering if anyone else post op was feeling so TIRED? Thanks!    — Tami G. (posted on June 24, 2003)

I have noreal input to your question but I am tired all the time too, I am anemic (was prior to surgery), and I think for me it has a lot to do with stress, a little depression - off my meds since surgery but think I need to go back on. I am much more happier now so it is a different kind of depression - stress induced I think and lack of sleep. I notice when I am having a real hard time and my body actually aches, that if I eat a banana I feel much better then next day - maybe you need some potassium?

When you say you "take iron" is it enough? Is it the right kind and is being absorbed? How low is your hemoglobin? I know a girl who was transfusion level and still taking oral iron. Cream of wheat with some Splenda on is good and it is VERY high in iron. Make sure your doctor is doing all he can for you with this. Best of Luck!

What is your hematocrit level? It is the percent of red blood cells in your blood. For women it should be between 36 and 40%. If it is low, the iron you take doesn't have enough cells to travel in. The B-12 shots that many of us take stimulate the body to make red blood cells. If that still doesn't help, your doctor may prescribe shots of Procrit to increase red blood cells. Please check into this.
