Question:
Has anyone had Gastro Plasty (late 70's early 80's) and has now had succuessfull RNY

I had Gastro Plasty in 1979 and again in 1982 the end result was failure. I have regained all the weight and am now considering having RNY surgery. Has anyone heard of having RNY after the Gastro Plasty? Thank you for your replies.    — [Anonymous] (posted on May 23, 2000)

If you regained weight after two gastroplasties, you might want to consider a distal bypass, such as the Duodenal Switch or distal RNY. You can find more info about the distal RNY here on AMOs and info on the DS at it's website, http://www.duodenalswitch.com. You may find some folks here who had a gastroplasty revised to proximal RNY and who can tell you how it went. Have you checked the Library? Look for Surgery Types, then RNY, Gastroplasty or Revision. It may take some digging. Good luck.

I too had a gastroplasty in 1979 and lost 167 pounds and kept it off for 15 years. Then the staple line disrupted and I gained all but 30 pounds of it back. I had a revision on 1-25-00 to a distal RNY with a micro pouch and have lost 75 pounds in 16 weeks. Thisw feels totally different than the first surgery. Good luck and email me if you have any questions...

I am sceduled for a RNY on July 7. I had a VBG with a revision, failure, and reversal. My new doctor feels that this is the answer for me. I hope you too can find peace in your search for answers.

Yes I had a gastroplasty in 1980. I regained all my wt and ended up with a "terminal" case of reflux. I would actually vomit into my lungs at night. I really thought I would end up drowning in my own secretions...awful. In 1997 I had a RNY. I had some unusual post op complications but nothing irreparable. I have maintained a 100 lb wt loss for 1 1/2 yrs. I can eat apples again, veggies, I don't have to pour fat on everything to make it go down and I DO NOT puke everyday. Would I do it again..in a heart beat..twice:). My e-mail is [email protected]. Let me know how you are. I can't seem to get on the chat line any more...anyone else having that problem? LOL Donna
