Question:
I Want to hear from fairly new post ops who have experienced plateaus

I would like to hear from others who,not too far out, have experienced plateaus. I would like some ideas. I am 6 weeks post op (lap procedure), 34 pounds down, I walk 40 minutes each day, eat between 750-850 calories each day(mostly proteins), and drink my water like a good girl. I am already on my second plateau ( for two weeks now). I need some ideas that have worked for others.    — twenc (posted on July 21, 2000)

I had Open Roux-en-y-Distal on 4/4/2000. I experienvced my first plateau at 6 weeks it last for 14 days (then I dropped 5 lbs). I am now 14 weeks post op and am expereiencing my second plateau. It started 1 July and I am still hanging on (no weight loss since then). My doctor said that sometime the body will just have to catch up and that it's trying to hang on to everything I eat. I have increased my protein and exercise. Others have said that this helped them break their plateaus. I shall see. Good luck and don't get discouraged theis seems to be part of the journey we have decide to undertake. I think you are doing wonderful. At six weeks I had lost 29 lbs. today I have lost 56.

Hi Toni, I had surgery the day after you did on 6/7, and I have been on two plateaus since then. One was two weeks after my surgery and one was just a week ago. They both lasted about a week. Just keep doing what your doing and and all of a sudden you will step on the scale and you will have lost a few pounds. I don't know why our bodies do this to us, because I know it is so frustrating, especially since I weigh myself everyday, I know your not supposed too, but I'm the type that I have to see the numbers move. Have you taken your measurements, I know when I was on the plateaus, I was losing inches, just not pounds, keep up the good work, I wish I could be more help, but just know your not alone :) If you need anything feel free to drop me a line.

Hi Toni, For the past few months I've considered myself the "Queen of Plateaus". I experienced my first plateau at about 4 weeks post op. I'd lost 28# and stayed there for two weeks. I then lost about 12# (in about 10 days) and stayed there another 2 1/2 weeks. Since then (I'm now just 4 months post) I've have experienced 3 more plateaus each lasting 2-3 weeks. I'm now -63# and (again) holding. All total, I think I've "plateau-d" for nearly the same amount of time I've actually "lost". I'm still averaging over -3# a week since my actual surgery on 3/8, and I'm looking and feeling sooo much better. I'm also off of several meds that I was taking pre-op, and I'm very grateful for that too. I wish I had some words of wisdom for you, but I think I've tried just about everything to break them and no "one thing" seems to work. Every time I plateau, I begin to second-guess myself and wonder if somehow I'M doing something wrong or if the surgery is STILL working. I'm convinced the surgery IS still working, however, because I still get "full" quite rapidly and I can still rarely eat more than 1/2 to 1 cup of food at a setting. But each new plateau gives me cause to re-examine my new eating habits which helps me to stay on track that way, and to forces me to increase my exercise just a little more. Yes, these "blasted plateaus" (as they have been "affectionately" named) ARE frustrating, but if there is an the upside to this, it's that they get me so Angry that I'm more determined than EVER to make this all work, and I'll continue to "keep on, keepin' on" until this weight is gone! I wish I could be more postive, but maybe it will help to realize that you're not alone. There ARE others who are going through the same frustration as you. I guess, we just need to take one day at a time and continue to trust that our surgery will continue to work and that eventually our bodies will realize that WE MEAN BUSINESS THIS TIME! So, DON'T GIVE UP, sweetie! Believe you me, I'M not. Good luck and God bless. cj

34 lbs. in 6 weeks is incredible!! You should be very proud and very happy with your loss. My suggestion would be to not weigh yourself so much. I realize you are very anxious, but if you've noticed a second plateau in only 6 weeks you are stepping on the scale too often. At six weeks you shouldn't be weighing enough to be able to notice a plateau.

Hi! Well, it sounds like you are doing everything right. I, too, have experienced a number of plateaus and I had surgery on 4/4. Mine never have lasted longer than 2 weeks and one day (weird, huh?) Plus, when I do break them, I don't drop 12 pounds like someone else said, I usually drop 1 to 4 pounds. I guess I'm just going to have to accept the fact that I'm a slow loser. I have lost 45 pounds but I've also lost 6 inches from my hips, 6 from my waist, and 6 from my chest. Be sure you've tracked your inches lost cause I always lose inches even when on plateaus. Keep up the good work.

I had a plateau for 1 1/2 months and gained 6 lost 10 gained 5 lost 1 over and over. Doctor said this is FAT cellks holding fluids, you have to be able to loose liquid in order to loose weight. The more you frink the more you loose the more that flushes. Read Carnie Wilsons 2nd Book. Ive been at 70 pounds only for 2 months now....Am I worried, NO Ive lost 15 inches...turned it all into muscle, who cares what you weight when you have lots less fat and more muscle its just a number!!!!!
