Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

i have fought the weight loss battle all of my life. i had always wanted to have bariatric surgery but was always talked out of it. i was always depressed, never wanting to paricipate in any activities.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

never being able to look people in the eye. you always knew that they were staring at you, making you feel were worse thsn you already did.i hated the clothes that i had to wear.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

being outdoors!

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

i heard about the open rny from a tv show. i was so excited from the first moment that i heard about it. i felt like the show was especially for me. 4 months later i was on the operating table having it performed!

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

i was in the hospital for 4 days, the worst thing about the stay was the food. remember to bring personal things from home like your own pillow, favorite blanket, etc.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

i didn't have any complications from the surgery.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

my surgeons office has a monthly support group, i can't attend all the time but this is very important to have people who understand what you have been through.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

people treat me so differantly now. i have lost a friend over this, she's overweight and i guess she feels intimidated by me.
