Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I have battled the weight loss issue for many years. Obesity runs in my family, so I know that I had to do something that would help me long term or I would not be around long. Being heavy has been an emotional roller coaster for me, and I knew things had to change. I have an 11 year old daughter that I know needs me and I was affraid I wouldn't be here to see her frow up.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

The worst thing about being overweight was things that you felt were restricitions. I would find myself not going to places to avoid booths at resturants and chairs at certain locations. I felt not wanting to do things with my daughter for fear of embarrassing her alothough it NEVER affected her. To her I was just MOM

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

EVERYTHING I was very active before the surgery I didn't let my weight hinder me but just being active without being so tired and sitting in booths and bending over without being out of breath.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

Well I first heard of it from a girlfriend that had it. I was as little skeptical at first only from a stand point that I wanted her to be ready, emotionally and physically, but i know that she needed to do this also for her health also.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

Well the hospital stay I cannot say was the best, I didn't feel I was checked on properly unless I called someone to help me. I can't say there is anything important to bring, after the surgery it is a whole new you. I had my surgery Tuesday morning and I went home Thursday morning. I didn't have an problems when I left the hospital, I was checked for leakage and thank god, there was none.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

I didn't have any major complications after sugery. I will say that getting in all of the things in a day they want you to get in is not easy. The chewable tablets, the calcium, the drinks made it not so easy, but tolerable.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I didn't have any acxiety on a negative basis more of just an excited, can't wait for it to happen feeling. I am so glad I did it, it was the best thing in my life I have ever done.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

The aftercare program is availble, there are clinics, and groups that are availble to you. I ama very strong person and when i decided this was gonna be my decision, I meant it and I was gonna be ready for the lifestyle change and no looking back, so I think I am doing great !

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

I had the Laproscopic method so I have 5 tiny tiny little incisions and they healed without fail. My girlfriend did have the open surgery and I don't envy that at all.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

Well I am 6 weeks post op and down 56 lbs so I am feeling wonderful the plateau experiences are really none I have had some eating issues I am just not hungry and I am forcing myself to eat. This is not good so don't think it is you need to eat and you need your protein.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

Yes, I notice that people look at you different and you are treated differently. I was shocked at resturants when you only eat a small portion how they look at you and think " she is heavy why isn't she eating all this?"
