Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

After years of battle I had all but given up on the dream of ever being able to live a normal life.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

FEAR! Fear of health problems, fear of social situations, fear of being alone, fear of helplessness, fear of emotional and physical pain, fear of not being able to work, .....

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Not depend on my husband so much, I can do most anything around the house and yard.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

1993, I had a friend who had the surgery. She never did well, the loss was minimal and many problems. I didnt see it as a option at that time.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

Baptist Hospital in Nashville, was great, no complaints.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

No. The only thing I wish I had known to wear the support binder all the time the first 10-12 weeks. I think it may have prevented hernias.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I felt fine most of the time,if I stay buisy. I still seem to fight depression.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

The scar has streched in width about one inch. I think if I had worn the binder and a good support bra it would not have been a problem.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

Some weeks I may not lose the next week a large loss. I dont rely on the scales. I know when I am eating right.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

People who had little to say, now want to talk. ????????/
