Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

It was just a constant battle. No matter what I tried I just couldn't stay away from either the wrong foods or the wrong quantities. Long story short... at age 17 I weighed 107 lbs. At 52 I weigh in at 292.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Not being able to properly clean certain unreachable areas when away from home.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I don't remember where I first introduction was .... perhaps with that Carney woman who was famous. I just don't know. My first impression was it seemed mighty drastic but what was my recourse. I couldn't stick with anything else. And now it has been effecting my health.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

My 1st hospital stay was perfectly fine. Although let me warn future bariatric patients. The nurses were very caring and attentive at Hurley Medical Center in Flint. The doctor staff from Hurley Weight Loss Clinic were in to see us more than once each day. We all seemed to feel quite cared for. I even got a hug from one of the nurses when it was time to leave.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

Ah Yes! Complications! Future bariatric patients BEWARE! Although you must always consult with your doctor, I learned the hard way.... Son't go into the surgery constipated. When you do naturally that means you are full of _ _ _ t. When you go into surgery, your bowels go to sleep. Within a day or so your bowels should typically at least be making noise. Well, mine didn't or barely. When released from the hospital I was still constipated. I began my diet faithfully. 3 1/2 days later I landed in Emergency just bent over with pain. Got an enema within a few hours of arriving. Thought that would be the end of the problem. I had also been vomiting twice daily once admitted to the hospital for 3 days.It also seemed that after a Barium swallow my surgeon found that where the "y" is in the operation, at that juncture the opening was narrow. I begged to leave the hospital after 6 days of no food or water. My surgeon reluctantly allowed me to but put me on clear liquids ONLY. Even following those dietary instructions the liquid has come back up. I'm going to try for another day or two but if I'm not ok I must return to the hospital immediately. So please heed my warning.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

The only anxiety I've had is having to go back into the hospital & staying 6 more days.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

While I havn't felt the need at this time to attend a support group, there is no doubt in my mind that they are essential.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

It is from the belly button to about 1 1/2" below breast line. Yes this is what I expected. Dr. Obeid was extremely thorough in explaining everything. Even when I was readmitted to the hospital he saw me each day and explained all that was going on. He is the best!!!!!!!!

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.
