Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I have been overweight all my life. I have tried several diets over the years. I finally gave up and accepted the weight I was. Then I turned 40 and realized my health was failing fast. I knew it was time to do something.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

My health problems

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Walking without getting out of breath. Crossing my legs! I feel like a real women. I use to be jealous of people who could cross their legs. It makes me feel more life a WOMEN!

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I learned about it 10 years ago before they were done laprascopically. I had a consult back then, but decided on not having it done. I wasn't ready emotionally for this type of surgery. I also didn't have the support that I needed at the time.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

I had a wonderfull stay in the hospital. The staff was wonderful to me and were very encouraging. The only problem was the swallow study that was done. The staff in the x-ray department were not well educated as the the correct procedure that was to be done post-op. I didn't really need to bring much except slippers and a robe.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

I had no complications from the surgery. Everything went very well.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I really felt great after surgery. I was ready to get back to work. I was back in three weeks. I was a little cranky for a while I think because my body had to make some changes.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

I didn't have any support group after surgery. I was the first in this area and I had to wait for the support group to be organized. We just started our support group and have had two meetings so far. I have been a little disappointed, but we are just starting and I think it will be better in time. It's very important to be able to share your story with others and compare with other people as to what they are going through.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

I have six very small scares. I had two c-sections and this was nothing compared to that.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

I have felt wonderful since my surgery. My life hasn't really changed a whole lot yet. But, I do feel better about myself and I am trying new things. I know now that I will live a lot longer than before the sugery and I am enjoying my family as much as I can.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

Yes, I think people notice me more. I don't seem to blend in as I use to. I also am more confident and able to talk to people much easier.
