Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I was in denial. I did not think I looked as bad as I thought I did. I refused to admit my being overweight until my health started to decline.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

I would have to say the worst part of being overweight was not being able to do simple everyday task such as tying your shoe-laces, bending over in the shower to shave your legs, walking without getting out of breath. The most mental part of being overweight is not being able to be in Control.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I am in control of my life. I can paint my toenails, Shave my legs, Play with my children, Walk without pain and being out of breath and most important I can look in the mirro and smile. I am happy

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

After extensive research I took it upon myself to go to peers in my area on ObesityHelp.com and either email them or try to contact them by telephone. I wanted their experiences to be shared with myself. I also joined a support group in my area BEFORE making my final decision.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

Medical Center East In Birmingham was an excellent Hospital I would suggest it to anyone. I was in the hospital for 2 days. I didnt have the need for anything that I brought with me. The hospital provided everything that I needed. I was VERY pleased.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

The only complication I had from my surgery was the passing of a kidney stone after my surgery. I had passed them before and was able to identify the pain as NOT being gas from the actual surgery.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I really only had two weeks to prepare myself, my family and take care of everything. I was given a surgery date that was much sooner then we expected but when your looking at your future face to face there is no great hurdles that cant be taken care of. I was at peace within myself about my choice.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

I am a member of the Wings of WLS Support group in the Madison/Huntsville area and I must say it was one of the most important steps that I took BEFORE having surgery. I knew what to expect. And most important I was accepted as I was and when the rest of the world is so judgemental you can always have support within yourself, your family and your support group.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

I have 6 small scars about 1/2 inch each and They are exactly like scars from a lap GallBladder removal.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

I have had an exceptional easy recovery from my surgery. No plateas as of date. I have started a walking exercise routine on a treadmill and the weight is melting off.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

I have had lots of compliments and praise since my surgery. I myself did not allow people to treat me differently as a result of my excess weight. I voiced my thoughts and reactions to negatively in a manner in which it would not be tolerated. If it was done without my knowledge I feel that was their problem. Not mine. No One in this world is perfect and without fault. When you point a judgemental finger a one person......you have three pointing right back at yourself.
