Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I have struggled with my obesity all of my life. I felt ashamed and embarrassed. A lot of people think it is a sign of weakness and it is not any such thing. I am thrilled to have done the surgery, it has changed my life forever.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Being teased and stared at.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

everything

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I am a hair stylist in a small salon and a lady came in to get her nails done. She had the bypass done and looked great. At first I judged her as being weak even though I knew how hard it is to lose weight. But then I really listened to her and it all made perfect sence. She is a great lady and a wonderful inspiration to me.

Describe your experience with getting insurance approval for surgery. What advice, if any, do you have for other people in this stage?

I had no trouble at all.

What was your first visit with your surgeon like? How can people get the most out of this meeting?

He was a very nice man and very helpful, answering all of my questons.

What made you finally decide to have the surgery?

I was tired of being fat.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

The hospital was clean and comfortable as far as hospitals go. I was for five days. Warm slippers and a back scrubber.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

No complications, never felt better.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

Wonderful and happy, it is so much fun to shop for new clothes.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

I have lots of support from family and friends. A good friend of mine, Tammy MacDonald and I have started a support group for ourselves and anyone who is interested. We meet twice a month and visit for hours with people who want the surgery or have had the surgery. It is very helpful to have someone to talk to about all of the feelings and anxeity.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

I just have seven little bity scars from lapriscopy.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

The weight loss slows down after a while but I walk and/or exercise more.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

Yes people treat me like a real human being.
