Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I had a weight problem during my childhood and early teens. I joined the military and was in top shape. After taking a disability retirement in 1996, I gained over 75 lbs. I had lower back problems, right hip and knee problems and both feet had been operated on. I could not exercise any longer and walking was painful. I withdrew into my own shell and felt very depressed and overwhelmed.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Being ashamed of myself and losing self-esteem!

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I have my self-esteem back and feel proud to be around others.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I researched the internet and asked my primary physician for a referral because I was very interested and knew it was worth checking into further.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

I had a great hospital stay, but the bed was very uncomfortable. I was in for three days, although Dr B was willing to let me check out after two days. My most important things to bring were a robe, slippers, toothpaste/brush, shampoo and soap.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

I've had NO complications!

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I was totally psyched for the surgery. I knew that this surgery was a gift from God. I did a lot of praying and had no anxiety!

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

I use the obesityhelp.com website and monthly Bariatric meetings at the local hospital. I find the in-person support group the best for me!

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

My scar is minimal compared to the big scar up the middle I had from Gastric stapling in 1999! This incision is about 9 inches long, but was sealed with medical glue, not staples. There will be a very slim line in the future.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

I lost about 15 pounds the first 2 weeks, but have only lost about 20 lbs at 6 weeks. I am waiting to be released within a couple days to supervised exercising which will definitely help the weightloss continue!

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

I get many compliments on how much better I look and act!
