Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I was definitely an emotional eater. I didn't realize it until I started attending the support sessions for surgery. I am in counselling now and I am trying to find ways to handle my emotions besides food.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Loss of confidence and feeling inferior to everyone. Also not feeling lovable and accepting bad relationships just to be in one.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I enjoy feeling thinner and walking. Walking was always my solace but the heavier I became the less I walked. Now, it's no problem. I also like the compliments and feeling better about myself. Since I am still losing weight, I am borrowing clothes. I am learning to love myself and to put myself first. I think we tend to believe that if we put ourselves first we are being selfish. On the contrary, we are loving ourselves. That is the big difference. In terms of the emotional eating, when I get stressed, I say a prayer or try to think of the positive side of a situation. I have also tried to just let things go. This is difficult, but if I can't change it.... I have to let it go. Let Go and let God.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I was referred by my endocrinologist and was very receptive.

Describe your experience with getting insurance approval for surgery. What advice, if any, do you have for other people in this stage?

I bad no problems and was appproved the first time around. Do everything the surgical counsellor tells you. They know what to do and how to handle the insurance companies.
