Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I am 54, and have been over weight all my life from child hood to now. This has been an emotional battle, at one time I put it in the back of my mine and said people will just have to like me the way I am because it did not seem to change. I have been on every diet in this world, lost 80, 25, 16, 40 lbs only to gain all plus back, each time I would lose weight I would give away my fat clothes only to have to by bigger sizes each time, I just can not go on like this I want to be normal or at least as normal as I can be.I know that this will help me to be a healther and happier person and I am so looking forward to that time.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

I have fought high blood presure, diabeties, and depression for years, I have a 9 year old little girl, and I want and need to see her grow up. I can't walk with her like I want to or play games with her with out getting tired or out of breath, I never have the engery to do the things I want to do and I feel so afraid I will miss out on the things in life I want to see, my mother passed away at age 63 at age 47 she had already had 3 major heart attacks. I don't want this for me. Right now I have no engery to do much of anything and I want to be able to be more involed in my childs life.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I walk and i can walk up stairs with out being out of breath. I also play with my daughter, and am able to ride bikes with her as well as swim. I am wearing smaller clothes and that is great, and I feel so good and do not get tired easly, I can take my daughter to the park or shopping and go all day without having to rest or nap.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I got on the internet and started looking it up, I found people who had had the surgery and how fast the weight came off, then I saw the special on 48 hours and this really got me interested, so I talke to people on the internet, talke to my phy, and talk to my pcp, they are all behind me and will help me in any way they can, so I got my referal and called Dr. Rolls office the same day and made my first appointment. for Feb 10,2000. People seem to have noticed that I have already lost weight and people that do not know me do seem to treat me with more respect. For the first time I over heard two ladies talking about me in a resturant tonigh 7/7/00 and both made very nice statments about how good I looked in my jeans and how they wished they could eat what they wanted and look that good, no one has ever before said anything like that,. It felt wonderful.
