Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I hated myself and my body. I was embarassed and ashamed of it.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Not being able to ride on rides at the amusement parks, having to ask for a seat belt extention when I was on an airplane. Having the kids at my children's school laugh and make fun of me.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I can ride on an airplane and fasyen and adjust the seatbelt with an extention. Also I can ride any ride at the amusement park that I want. I can go in any store and try things on off the rack. I can run up the stairs and not be totally out of breath. Before I couldn't even walk up the stairs without stopping to catch a breath.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

A friend at work had it done and told me about it. And I was for it right away.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

My stay in the hospital was great. I was there for 4 or 5 days. The most important thing to take to the hospital is a PILLOW for the ride home.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

I had no complications.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I really mourned food. My surgery was around birthdays and Christmas and I really wanted to eat and indulge like everyone else. It was hard.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

My husband aws a God send...I would not have been able to go through it, if it had't been for him.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

My scare is about 4 inches long.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

I am 3 1/2 years out now and I have lost 150 lbs and have maintained that for the last 2 years although friends and co-workers say I'm still losing.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

Yes I do but people say that I have change. Thet say I am more out-going and out-spoken.they also say my self esteem has really gone up.
