Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

Yo Yo Dieting. It became an obessesion.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

The inability to move around as much as I wanted too. The wear and tear on the body was too much to handle. I felt that I was aging to soon.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Able to walk further. I have more energy, and my house is cleaner. I like to try on clothes that are smaller and fit me. I love to get rid of my clothes. I like getting on the scale and it keeps getting lower. Everything I have is baggy.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I found out with the broadcast of Carnie Wilsons surgery. I was a bit shocked, that a person can get to the point of having their stomachs surgically shrunk. I felt that it was too drastic.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

The hospital I stayed in is a teaching hospital. I felt that the staff did what they could to help me as much as possible. I was there for 5 days. I think that the best thing to bring is your toiletries. I was ready for a shower, and boy the was the best thing I did.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

I had no bad complications. I do tend to be dehydrated. That was a problem before surgery, so therefore, I continue with this struggle.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I tried to get my house organized. I educated my children. I felt like that was the longest waiting I ever had to do. Until I went to my Pre-op appointment, they moved my date up 2 weeks. Then I panicked, it was too fast in coming!!!!!!

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

There is no after care program. I do attend support group meetings. I get support from my new friends I have met at the support group. They have been wonderful. I have learned ways to deal with the problems, and taken their suggestions on nutrition.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

The scar I have is from an open incision. It is pretty ugly, but not as big as I expected. Hopefully if I have a tummy tuck, maybe the Plastic Surgeon can minimize it.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

I tend to Plateau after I lose 10lbs. It last about 2 weeks.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

No, I have been pretty open about this whole experience. I have great support from my friends and family. My co-workers are happy for me and I get congratulated often. I think people see me happier and that makes me more approachable.
