Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I hated to look at myself in the mirror. I became depressed when I went shopping for clothes. I thought everyone saw me the way I saw myself. My energy level was low, and I had a hard time doing things with my husband and children.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Feeling guilty during or after eating in front of others.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Not sure yet

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I heard about WLS by word of mouth and television. Initially WLS did not interest me. It seemed to risky for me.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

My stay in the hospital was surprisingly pleasant. The nurses were nice and professional. I stayed the hospital 3 days after my surgery. I didn't take anything to the hospital. My husband later brought my toiletries and something to wear home.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

No.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I felt tired, sore and concerned that the surgery would not work. I weighed myself continously and tried on old clothes. Watching the weight drop off made me feel better.

Describe your first few weeks home from the hospital. What should people expect from this period?

I was very sore and in pain. My husband and family helped out alot. People should expect to take it slow. Don't over exert yourself.

How far did you travel to have your surgery? (If far, how did this affect your aftercare?)

25 miles

Please describe in detail what things you could and couldn't eat in the weeks and months following surgery. What foods have been off limits? Please explain how your dietary tolerance changed week-by-week, and then month-by-month since surgery.

The first week after my surgery I could only have liquids. I could not eat solid foods. (i.e. crackers, breads, meats, etc.) My doctor gave me a food list of what to eat. I eat and drink soups, oatmeal, broth, blended fruit smoothies, fruit juices, applesauce and water.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

So far obesityhelp.com is my only support group. I think it's very important to have a support group.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

My scar is still sore but healing well. It starts from just beneath my breast and goes to my navel.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

I haven't had any plateau experiences.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

My husband seems somewhat insecure since the surgery. I didn't tell people what type of surgery I had.
