Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I was a dieter, always was and always will be !!! even with WLS, this surgery has just made it a whole lot easier. I was an emotional eater, but after the past few years of dieting and losing 10-15 lbs., then the scale wouldn't move anymore, I just kept eating, and eating....I was out of control. then a friend had WLS last May, I wanted to wait to see how things went for her before I made any final decisions, needless to say I had WLS Feb. 19, 2004 and I am down 42lbs. already.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Just feeling rundown & tired all the time, i did not have any serious health problems, but Diabetes runs in my family and I knew if i didn't do this i was next on the Diabetes hit list !!!!

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

i was able to do everything b-4 WLS, i am just a big girl, i was never so obese that i could not walk, i just could not get the weight off, i have been dieting my whole life, but i guess what i enjoy most right now, i not getting out of breath while walking& some running on the treadmill.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

The first time i ever heard of it was when Carnie Wilson had it done, but my friend had it done last May(03), she was the only person who I knew of who had WLS, i knew a long time ago that this was the answer for me, but i never knew it was a reality, when insurance companys started covering it, i knew i would be getting it done, and now i couldn't be happier, and i must say i do not feel one bit deprived.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

i had my surgery on thursday feb. 19, 2004, (afternoon), i was up walking after the surgery, firday i walked the hospital halls all day, saturday they finally fed me(liquids) and i went home saturday night, over all my stay was very good, the only bad thing was having a roomate, i would have preferred a private room. as far as what to bring,I overpacked(as usual) slippers anre most important, and comfortable PJ's

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

No complications, in fact i wasn't in too much pain,(it was a more uncomfortable feeling) i did not take the morphine, nor did i get the percaset filled

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

i've felt fine, i am only 5 1/2 weeks post-op, i am a bit more tired, but i know it is b/c my body is still healing, at least it isn't form coming down off of my sugar rush

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

now that the cuts have healed, they are smaller than i thought, my stomach looks like a road map, but i dont care, i'll just tan my stomach at the tannig salon

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

i think i hit a plateau at 3 weeks, i was just couldnt get past the 30 lb. mark...in my body's defense i was PMS-ing, and once that came the weight did fall off
