Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I am on over eater. I have been since I was 11 years old and moved to the States. I struggled with food to the point where I could not go a minute without thinking about what I was going to eat next. After I would eat I would hate myself for eating. I ate because I wanted to not because I needed to. There was never a day that passed that I didn't obsess about what was going to be made for dinner, if it wasn't fast enough the fast food resturants became my closest friends. I was also a closet eater-everyone always told me they could not understand why I was fat because they never saw me eat. They just never saw me eat the whole box of Twinkies or sit and gorge on choclate and ice cream.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

The worst thing had to be the way people always looked at me and judged me before getting to know me. I was once photographed on a cell phone at a festival I was attending by some idiot men who laughted a pointed at me. I was doing nothing, they never gave me a chance-not that I wanted one from them. It hurt pretty bad. That was one of my lowest days.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Climbing mountains with my son, going up stairs and not dreading going to a resturant where I won't fit in the chairs or booth.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I first heard of this from a friend who had the Lap- Band done. I wasn't sure if that was what I wanted for I researched for more information. First impression?? Scary!

Describe your experience with getting insurance approval for surgery. What advice, if any, do you have for other people in this stage?

Stay on them!!! Call and make sure everything is going ok. DOn't give up when they give you answers you don't want to hear. Be prepared and ready t wait!

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

I was in the hospital for 5 days. I was never told that my first stool could have blood in it and it freaked me out when it happened and I thought I was dying. It wasn't just a little blood it was A LOT! The nurse (Ellie) held me tight when she found me curled up on the bed crying and told me that this can happen. They mess with your insides!!! it's bound to happen. Because I lost a little more than expected they kept me in a little longer. I suggest bringing a warm robe because the hospital doesn't believe in heat :) Bring compy slippers and chapstick!

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

No complications-It was perfect! I was a lucky one.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I got my surgery date in March and the surgery was in June. I waited so long just to see the surgeon it didn't seem real when I finally got the date. I was excited and just continued to read and ask as many questions as I could. I began attending a support group before my surgery and that really helped.

Describe your first few weeks home from the hospital. What should people expect from this period?

Don't lift anything and let people wait on you! I started to do things way to early and I was in a little more pain but it was my fault. My doctor kept the drains in and that hurt like hell!!! don't let them do that! I couldn't wait just to get that out. Follow doctors orders and all should be good!

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

I attended a support group for 2 years after my surgery. NOw I don't attend one and need to go back. When you stop goign you stop the focus and that is where I am right now.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

I can only see one out of the 6 that I have now. It is better than expected.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

I lost all my weight in pretty steady motion. I didn't hit one until right now where I have gained some weight and now can't seem to make the scale move.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

My closest friends don't. Others do. People talk to me instead of rying to avoid the fat chick!
