Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I have battled with my weight all my life. I was never a normal weight. I've tried every weightloss program on the market and after each one i gained the MORE weight back.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

The worst thing about being overweight is not being able to keep up with my children. Getting tired so quickly and the way people treat you. Youre not treated like a human when your overweight.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Eating my comfort food!

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I found out about bariatric surgery through my mother who was researching it. My first impression was "NO WAY" its way to dangerous. That was until i found the LAP-BAND.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

My stay at the hospital was great i was only there for one day. The staff at St. Vincent were fantastic. The things i brought with me were.... Chapstick for dry lips since they dont allow you to drink right away. My own pillow, a robe for walking the halls, toothbrush and hairbrush. Thats all i needed.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

I had some bleeding from an incision that had a lot of scar tissue, they kept pressure on it for a couple hours and all was well.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I had a lot of pain after my surgery, i didnt have much anxeity. Lortab was my best friend for a couple weeks.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

My scars are ok, One was in my bellt button, its fully healed and invisible. My port scar is about an inch long now but it looks ok. Two others are small and almost invisible. But one is still open, with some infection.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

I'm not losing like others do. In fact, im still on liquids and havent dropped any weight in a week. :[

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

As of yet people still treat me the same. No one really knows i had surgey.
