Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I was constantly worried about my weight and always wanted to lose. I tried to diet a trillion times, only to fair miserably.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Wondering if it was going to effect my healthy, and when.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Not applicable yet.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

Through my PCP. I was relevied and elated that I could be a candidate for the surgery.

Describe your experience with getting insurance approval for surgery. What advice, if any, do you have for other people in this stage?

My insurance approval was fast and uneventful. I didn't even know the surgeon had submitted the paperwork. I received my approval about 1 week after I chose surgery date with the surgeon. Capitol District Physician's Health Plan was wonderful.

What was your first visit with your surgeon like? How can people get the most out of this meeting?

My first visit with the surgeon was great. He spent 1.5 hours with me and addressed every question I had before I even had a chance to ask them. He was kind, caring, considerate and not remotely pushy. He told me that I didn't have to have the surgery if I did not want to, no pressure.

What made you finally decide to have the surgery?

I wanted to improve my quality of life.

How did you decide which proceedure to have?

After speaking to both the Lap and Open surgeons, I decided on the open mainly due to my comfort level with teh Open Surgeon. Also, I felt that Open had less complications.

What fears did you have about having complications or even dying from from the surgery, and what would you tell other people having the same fears now?

I have major fears. I have a small daughter (6) and felt that I was putting her life on the line, buy putting my life on the line. My suggestion is to think it over carefully and then think again. Only you can decide for you.

How did your family and friends react to your decision? Would you have communicated anything differently if you could now? How supportive were they after your surgery?

All were supportive albeit scared that something may go wrong. All stood by me through it all.

How did your employer/supervisor react to your decision? What did you tell him/her? How long were you out of work?

Wonderfully, very supportive, very encourging, and they are even paying me for time off of work beyond what sick/vacation time I have.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

Great. Five days. Most important a fan. It brings you coolness and "fresh" air.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

No not one! Thank god.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I am only two week post-op and I feel great. No anxiety. A bit of head hunger, but to be expected.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

Albany Medical Center has a support for anyone who has or is considering having the surgery. I enjoy it very much. It really helps you see that you are normal, and help give you insight into what to expect.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

So far so good. I had stiches, not staples, the line is thing and clean. I am hoping it says so good looking.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

None yet.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

No, but I have not yet lost significant weight, that will surely make a difference
