Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I could not look at myself in a full length mirror, I refused pictures because it would confirm what I knew was true.

What was your first visit with your surgeon like? How can people get the most out of this meeting?

My first visit was great- informative and I liked him immediately. ask questions and write them down before hand and bring them with you. Remember it's your time and money and most of all your life.

What made you finally decide to have the surgery?

I could not participate with my 2 granddaughters lst expereince in an amusement park and had to sit on a bench the entire day.

What fears did you have about having complications or even dying from from the surgery, and what would you tell other people having the same fears now?

I did have complications and very serious ones in spite of my 45 lbs weight before surgery, exercising and taking the recommended vitamins. It's a personal choice. No one anticipated what was going to happen to me so, it's a risk but a serious risk. As a nurse I knew what could possibly happen, but I never bargained for all of the possible complications ( minus the dying). I would do again in a heartbeat- the reults are great!

How did your family and friends react to your decision? Would you have communicated anything differently if you could now? How supportive were they after your surgery?

My family was hesitant- Not much emotional support from my spouse- he was extremely angry about the complications /during the complications, my children and extended family and friends however were great

Yes, I had extended surgery for the bypass. I dealt with them with Diluadid.
