Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

Weight control was something I gave up on before I heard about this surgery. I had fought with weight issues from my teenage years. Everytime I lost, I would gain it back plus some. For the last year before surgery, I gave up and just ate whatever I wanted.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Being treated like an it instead of a female.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I happily shop for clothes insteaad of dreading it.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I found out about it through a TV show; talk show type. My first impression was that it was too good to be true.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

My stay in the hospital was not as easy as I had expected. I was very uncomfortable even with pain management. It was an effort every time I had toget up and do something simple. Drainage tubes were disgusting and frightening to me. Don't get me wrong, I would still do it all over again if I had to.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

None

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I was elated and anxious in a good way. I was also busy moving into my first house. The waiting period never really bothered me.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

I call my doctor if I need anything. I am not a support group person, so I am glad that I am not forced into that situation.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

It is long and bumpy. It is bigger than what I expected. If the scar had to be twice as long and even bumpier, I would do tis again in a heartbeat if I had to.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

I have not had any yet. I have lost 85 pounds in 5 months and it has all been steady loss.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

Oh yes. It makes me angry more than anything. Now men at work hold doors open for me. Was I a less worthy person before??
