Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I was always big, for as long as I can remember. I think I just thought I was like every one else until High School, then I saw how different I was, How out of shape, and started to realize how others saw me. I would always deny overeating, and always thought I got plenty of physical activity, but I was a "big couch potato" in fact. Emotionally I would make jokes about overweight people to cover up my own fellings of selfworth. With weight loss comes self esteem!!!

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Higher health risk factors. Judgements by others.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Playing ball with my children, walkikng with my wife and riding rollercoasters.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I remember sitting in my Grandmother's house, and hearing that Carnie Wilson Had GBS. I was about 15yrs. old and Had a thought of " WOW! I wish I could have that surgery."

Describe your experience with getting insurance approval for surgery. What advice, if any, do you have for other people in this stage?

I was approved the first time I applied. I had a strict set of criteria I had to follow and complete first. Do not give up , file an appeal if your are denied you are paying for the Insurance , so use it.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

The stay was great, the Nursing staff at Cenntenial were very understanding and helpful. I was in the Hospital for 4 days, I had a few minor complications (bleeding). You should bring a tooth brush, I think that was the most important thing for me, your mouth will be so dry, and you will have a taste for a few days.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

I was a "bleeder" meaning I started to bleed post -op through my new pouch. Dr. Houston took great care of me, the bleeding stopped, but I still had to have a blood transfusion.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I was on cloud nine. I had waited for so long, I called everyone I knew to tell them, "BAD IDEA" you may get disscouraged. I was so happy, after being approved I only had a 5 week wait.

Describe your first few weeks home from the hospital. What should people expect from this period?

The first few weeks are a time of learing, not only for you, but your entire family. You will need lots of support, not as much physically as emotionally.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

I attend a large group in Cookeville, TN. We have about 70 members+/_ . It is very important to stay in group support, you will need help, and what better way to get it than from someone who has gone through the same or similar surgery. Get in a group as soon as posible.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

I can not see them anymore.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

I lost about 210 lbs. in 10 months. I have slowed down to around 3 lbs. a month now.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

Yes, and it fells good to know that I am noticed for losing weight, but also sad to know that you are judged for the size you are, no mater how you look or care for your self.
