Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

Very depressing. Emotions would be rock bottom most of the time. Any bumps in the road of life made it worse. And trying to shop for clothing was unheard of.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Coments from others. Trying to find cloths. And trying to get around.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

As of yet nothing at 7 weeks out. I have no energy as of yet. Unlike most.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

On TV. Expensive. I had heard of it 4 years before I could have it done. I had given up on being able to get it done. Then landed a job with excelent insurance.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

My stay in the hospital was ok. Everyone was very pleasant. I was in for 3 days. Most important to bring is a spouse or signaficant other who is supportive and self.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

Yes. 2 weeks out my entire encission came open. How did I deal with them is being admitted into the local hosp for 8 days. Was stitched back up. Given 4 units of blood. Was on bed rest for the first 3 days.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

Had no anxiety only emotional rollercoaster. And I just road it out knowing I was on a journey to change my life.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

My area has a support group that meets on the 2nd sat of the month. It is very helpful. I was able to attend only one before surgery. But during my 2nd hosp stay they were very supportive and the group leader IS a GEM and a library of knowledge. She is a wonderful person.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

My original scar was very minimal. Was less than what I expected. But after splitting it open I have a huge nasty scar and is very ugly. I keep it hidden as much as possable. Don't even like for hubby to see it.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

No plateau as of yet and I'm now 7 weeks out.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

Just the people I work with. Everyone is interested in how I'm doing after all that I have been through.
