Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I was out of control. I always fealt that I would lose weight one day. That one day never came. I just kept getting bigger and bigger. I couldn't breathe, move, or function anymore. I was dying.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Just knowing every day you are going to die from your weight. You can't control it, it takes over.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I enjoy walking and being able to breath while I am sleeping. I actually got out and walked my kids for Halloween. It was amazing.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I saw an ad on tv ad was totally impressed. At first I just thought it was too drastic for me. Other people did that kind of stuff, not me.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

My hospital stay was ok. I was in pain and couldn't sleep very well. I wanted my own bed. The bed wasn't very comfy, but I just had surgery. The nurses were great and of course my Drs were the best!

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

No complication as yet. I am 4 1/2 weeks out.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I fealt so excited, releived, and terrified all at the same time. I tried not to envision the day or two after surgery, but the weeks later when I saw the scale move, and doing things with my kids.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

My Drs offer 2 support groups a month, online chat groups, and an email group. This has helped me tremendously with many things I am experiencing.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

I have six small insicions in a circle on my belly. One of the insicions on the left is the biggest one and it has a little bit of an internal stich poking out of it. The dr said it will fall off in time. The scar is about what I expected.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

I haven't had any yet.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

Yes, my ex-husband.
