Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I have been over weight all my life. I started dieting when I was 10 yrs old. I swear I tried every diet know and even invented a few lol. I had no self esteem or confidence.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

In my opinion everything. There is nothing good about being overweight.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Exercise Believe it or not I actually love exercising. I even joined a gym.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I found out about the surgery from a friend. My first impression and responce was the same. What do I have to do to get it done? And how soon can I make the first appiontment?

What was your first visit with your surgeon like? How can people get the most out of this meeting?

My first visit went great. I personally believe you can get the most from your first visit by not being afraid to ask questions. Remember you are dealing with your health and wellbeing. Talk to your surgeon about any concerns you have. Ask about his or her success rate in this type of surgery.

What made you finally decide to have the surgery?

I made the decision for myself not anyone or anything else. For me the decisiion was easy. I knew I would have the surgery no matter what.

What fears did you have about having complications or even dying from from the surgery, and what would you tell other people having the same fears now?

I really had no fears of dying. I have personally never been afraid of death. However I tell other people to have confidence and faith in themselves their doctors and nurses.

How did your family and friends react to your decision? Would you have communicated anything differently if you could now? How supportive were they after your surgery?

Most of my family and friends were very supportive and continue to be.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

I was in for three days. The nurses and staff at Magee Womens Hospital treated me with kindness and respect. My stay at the hospiatl was very pleasant. I think the most important thing you can bring to the hospital is a good strong positive attiutde. Along with a friend or relative who supports you.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

I was lucky I had no complications.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

When I was told my surgery was scheduled I was on cloud nine lol. I called everyone I know and even a few people I dont. I was so excited I wanted to shout to the world.

What vitamins and/or dietary supplements have you taken since your surgery?

I take multi vitamins, vitamin c, calcium, b-12, iron, and zinc

What was the worst part about the entire bariatric surgery process?

Waiting for my surgery date. Was the worst part for me personally

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

My surgery was laproscopic. I have about 6 teeny little scars that are barely noticeable.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

Yes all the time I have people who want to act like my friend now. When they wouldnt even give me the time of day before. I just tell them I am still me still the same person I was before the weight loss. So if they couldnt be my friend when I was bigger I dont need them now.
