Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I would use any and every excuse known to mankind to eat and overeat. I dealt with alot of tradgedies in my life at an early age, however, I had victories too but food was misused time after time.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Not having the energy level to participate with family, friends and son. The pain that it caused me physically was unbearable for me. Emotionally it was a losing battle.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I'm walking more b/c I am noticing the weight loss with regards to inches lost.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

My stay at Harpers' Cori Center was at first great, the nurse changes were unbelievable every 2 to 3 hours it was a different nurse and assistant. The second day was horrible, I was treated like garbage. Then God sent His Angels! the rest of my stay was alright but I was ready to go home before I actually felt like it. I spent a total of 3 days there an extra day as a result of a fever brought on by an intentional dumping experience by the nurses I had. Nothing really mattered, except I started my period there on the 2nd day so luckily I brought pads. I had chapstick,my Bible, picture of my son. Thats about all I cared for.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

Not really, just rough days here and there.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I was anxious ready for it to be over. That's when the insomnia started every night leading up to my day.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

I participate online but I will be participating in a group locally that my Cori center offers monthly. I have a network of WLS survivors whom I keep in contact with often so this helps.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

I have 6 small inch or two scars and appear to be minimal so far, but have not been long enough to know for sure. It is better than I even anticipated, kudos to Dr. Wood.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

Not there as of yet.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

Not really, but I'm sure it is only the beginning, I'm no different just a different way of eating and thinking about food in general and that is fine for me. Who cares what others really think, just keeo to themselves :-)
