Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I was depressed and had given up all social life. I felt hopeless.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

I could,nt breathe properly, walk any distance, and was ashamed for old friends to see me.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Going out and seeing old friends. Walking without SOB.Wearing clothes that I haven't worn for years.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

The straw that broke the camel's back was the fact that a co-workers husband had the surgery and there was nop stopping me once I learned it was possible so close.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

The hosp. I used was wonderful in all ways. I used Forsythe in Winston Salem, N.C. The staff was waiting for me on the day I arrived at the hosp. and I was whisked to O.R. and it was over before I knew it. I think the only really helpful thing is the chap stick.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

I had none. I healed perfectly and never had a moments problem.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I only waited three weeks and I was so anxious that I just counted the days and stayed on the chat line.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

The chat line is all I had. The hospital has a monthly support group but it is so far away from me that I never made it.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

My granddaughter asks to look at it every once in awhile. It is fading. Very, very light.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

I have lost quite slowly, but I eat as I please. Not really good. I have never experienced dumping or any other discomforts since right after the surgery so I am spoiled.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

Definitely. I get many compliments.
