Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I haven't had the surgery yet, but I am hoping to. I can tell you that I have topped the weight I could possibly get, because my body does not want to co-operate with the things my mind wants to do. Things like..walk across the room without pain, and without shortness of breath. I am in constant pain with my knees and all my joints in general, I have shortness of breath , and have problems getting around. I can no longer do things with my family that I use to do...like walking around in a park, shopping and things like that. I know this is because of my weight of 340 lbs, as of this date July 1, 2001. I also hate to have to wear huge size clothes, and I don't like myself when I look in the mirror. If only I could go back to when I first got married 26 years ago and weighed 115 lbs. I never knew that I would love food so much!! lol I know it is not what is outside of a person that counts, it is the inside, but when you are standing in the shoes of an extremely overweight person such as myself, you can see the physical and emotional pain it causes. I started off saying to myself..."I will go on a diet , tomorrow," Well I did that for a lot of years and now I am suffering for it. I often wonder why I couldn't do it on my own. Well, I don't understand why I couldn't. I am hoping and believe that this surgery (Gastric by-pass surgery) will help. I understand what every overweight person is going through! (I WROTE THIS A LITTLE BEFORE MY WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY ...IN 2002

It was good but I was in a lot of pain. Was there from Thursday through Sunday. It is important to bring a good support person to stay with you during your hospital stay.

I traveled 3 and one half hours for my surgery. Was a long way to go but was worth it.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

I have had some plateaus since my surgery but they were mostly near my goal weight. They stayed around maybe for a few weeks but then one day, low and behold, I had lost maybe 2 or 3 pounds overnight.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

Yes everyone is saying that I look great, which makes me feel great. Then, on the other hand, it makes me kind of sad that sometimes people who are overweight are treated differently than they should be.
