Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I had tried everything imaginable to lose weight. For over 30 years, I did pills, shots, liquid diets, TOPS, WW's, Overeater's Anon., Fen Phen, other amphetamines, extra thyroid medication, Slim Fast, starvation, the Atkins Diet. I would lose maybe 25-30 pounds and then gain that back plus 5-10 more, due to discouragemet. I began to feel like nothing I ever did would work, so the last 18 months I became a hermit in my home. I went to work, but that was all. Not even to church, which has always been my refuge. I felt too fat, hated my clothes but didn't want to buy any more 'fat clothes', so I became frumpy and uncaring, which plummeted me even further into depression. This last year I finally started doing resarch on the WLS surgery.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Being tired, feelng frumpy and undesirable, having all the accompanying rashes, shortness of breath, inabiliy to play with my grandchildren and do things wth my husband.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Walking on my treadmill, having energy. That's unbelievable!

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I had heard about it years ago, never thinking one day I might need it. Then I think Carnie Wilson brought it back into the public eye, and I thought there might be hope, eve though I don't have money like she has available. I didn't really know what it entailed, so went online to do research.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

I was in the hospital 2 days with just the IV, then went on food the 3rd day, so decided to stay on extra night to make sure all went well. I should have gone home Weds eve, as my nurses that night were the Laurel and Hardy of the nursing set. They were as nice as could be, but rather loud and inept... I didn't bring much. A pair of slippers, and my moisturizer! Didn't want to look like a prune. I did bring a toothbrush which was good since dry mouth was impossible to avoid. Had my DH bring clothes up later.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

Not so far. I am having a bit of trouble with swallowing I think, but it could be I am trying t go too fast.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I must admit to some small panic attacks thinking I may never be able to eat again. I am almost 4 weeks out, and still pretty much on soft stuff. Doesn't really matter though, since I only need 3-4 bites anyway .

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

A once a month meeting with a group from the doctor's office (other WLS people). I missed the second one as I got really sick right before it, and didn't feel up to going. I think it will be vital.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

I have 6 small incisions, and was ready for that as I had already had arthroscopic surgery on my shoulder.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

Not far enough along predict this. I am losing much more slowly than some of the others I have read about, which is a bit discouraging, but at least I am losing and not gaining.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

No. Mostly curious about what I eat and how much. I am treating myself differently, however!
