Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I have spent a lifetime battling my weight. At least 3 times at various stages in my life, I have lost over 100 pounds. Everyday has begun with an attempt to diet and control my weight.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

The worse thing about being overweight was trying to maintain good hygiene. After my weight went over 250 pounds hygiene became a real problem.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Being able to move without pain.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I read about the surgery in the news as Carne Wilson and Al Rocker used this tool.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

My stay was 3 days. I brought much more than I needed. Just about everything was provided.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

No complications.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I felt tired in the weeks after surgery. I took the opportunity to read & relax & take care of myself in ways that did not involve food.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

I go to support group once a month. In the beginning I did not go & thus I think I missed connecting with people.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

Scars are minimal.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

The weight has been falling off me. When it seems to slow down, I increase exercise.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

No - I just treat myself better.
