Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I have fought being overweight my entire life. After each subsequent child was born I was a little bigger than the time before until I ended weighing in at 239. That's not that much unless you are under 5 feet tall.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Not being able to do the things other people could do. Not being able to keep up with my children.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Still early, but exercising so far.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

My primary care physician recommended it. At first I would not even consider it.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

My stay in the hospital was a pretty good experience. St. Mary's in Richmond did an awesome job of taking care of me. I was operated on, on Friday and went home Monday evening. Slippers were the most used thing that I brought.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

No complications from the surgery. I had an allergic reaction to some of the pain medicine, but the nurses were on top of it right away.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I was excited in the weeks after I received my surgery date. I am a deeply spiritual person and I relied on God to help me through my anxiety. Prayer was my best weapon.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

There is a Forever Thin support group in Richmond. However, since I live several hours away I have not attended any meetings.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

I have about a 6 inch scar straight down the middle. It is exactly what Dr. Hutcher told me to expect.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

Two to three weeks after surgery I had lost approximately 20 - 25 pounds, then I did not lose another pound for two weeks. Best advice is to stay off the scales.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

Not yet. But I am only 4 weeks out and 32 pounds down.
