Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I have been fighting the weight battle since childhood. I have lost weight many times but have always regained it and more. When I'm at my heaviest I become depressed and tend to hibernate.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

How I looked and also the back pain I suffer.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Shopping and just getting around anywhere and everywhere I want to go.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I heard about it on TV when Rosanne Barr had her surgery. I started doing a little research about it then but basically I was afraid to seriously consider it. After Carne Wilson had her surgery I followed her progress on the internet. I did more and more research about it and after my back "went out" and I was in severe, constant pain for almost two months, I seriously started thinking about it and consulted my family doctor, my endocronologist and my orthopedist. They all agreed that it would be in my best interest to have the surgery.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

We have a monthly support group meeting. It is important to meet with others and to discuss issues with them.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

Most definitely... I seem to be treated much better which is unfortunate. I am basically the same person I always was but some people perceive me as being different.
